How Does the Formula Work?

The calculator converts a position between the Overworld and the Nether. Horizontal distances in the Nether are one eighth of the Overworld's, so every block you walk there covers eight blocks of the Overworld. The Y coordinate stays out of the ratio.

Overworld → Nether:
Nether X = floor(Overworld X ÷ 8)
Nether Z = floor(Overworld Z ÷ 8)

Nether → Overworld:
Overworld X = Nether X × 8
Overworld Z = Nether Z × 8
(kept inside the world border, -29,999,984 to 29,999,983)

Y: unchanged
Straight-line distance in the Nether: ÷ 8 (87.5% shorter)

Example: Overworld (800, 64, 800) → Nether (100, 64, 100)
Example: Overworld (-100, 70, 25) → Nether (-13, 70, 3)

Why the Division Rounds Down

Floor means rounding toward the smaller number. For positive coordinates that simply drops the fraction, but negative ones move away from zero: -100 ÷ 8 is -12.5, and floor makes it -13, not -12. A calculator that simply rounded would put a portal at X -100 one block off.

How Portal Linking Works

When you step through a portal, the game converts your position and looks for an existing portal around the converted point. In Java Edition it searches 128 blocks in every horizontal direction in the Overworld and 16 blocks in the Nether; the Nether range was cut from 128 to 16 in Java Edition 1.16.2 so that it matches the 1:8 scale. Bedrock Edition searches 128 blocks in both dimensions. Of the portals it finds, the closest one in a straight line wins, height included. If none is in range, the game builds a new portal no more than 16 blocks sideways from the converted point.

Why a Portal Links to the Wrong Place

Two Overworld portals 64 blocks apart convert to Nether points only 8 blocks apart, which is inside the Nether search range of both editions. Unless each one has its own Nether portal at its own calculated point, both can lead to the same Nether portal. Example: an Overworld portal at X 100, Z 200 belongs in the Nether at X 12, Z 25. The way back converts 12 and 25 to X 96, Z 200, and the game picks the portal closest to that point, which is the original one at 100, 200 as long as no other portal is closer.

Nether Highways

Because straight-line distance shrinks to one eighth, a 1,000-block tunnel in the Nether spans 8,000 blocks in the Overworld. Work out the portal at each end with the calculator so that both ends lead back to the bases they were built for.

Y Level, Roof and Lava

Y is not divided by 8: the game keeps the same height when it converts a position. In both editions the Nether's bedrock roof fills Y 123 to 127, and its lava seas fill everything at and below Y 31. In Java Edition you can still build on top of the roof up to Y 255; in Bedrock Edition the Nether's build limit is 128. When the game finds no room and has to force a new portal into the Nether, it places it between Y 70 and Y 118.

Tips & Recommendations

Both Directions

Divide by 8 into the Nether, multiply by 8 back. Negative coordinates round down: -100 becomes -13.

87.5% Shorter

A straight line in the Nether is one eighth as long. The result shows both distances from X 0, Z 0.

Exact Linking

Build each portal at its own calculated point. The game uses the portal closest to the converted point.

Java & Bedrock

The 1:8 ratio is the same. The Nether search range is 16 blocks in Java Edition and 128 in Bedrock Edition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Overworld to Nether ratio?

Horizontally, 1 block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld. Walking 100 blocks in the Nether covers 800 Overworld blocks. The Y coordinate is not scaled.

How do I link two portals?

Take the X and Z of the Overworld portal, divide each by 8 and round down, and build the Nether portal there. Going the other way, multiply the Nether X and Z by 8.

Does the Y coordinate matter?

Y keeps its value and is not part of the 1:8 conversion. It does count when the game picks the closest of several portals, because the game compares straight-line distances with height included.

Why does my portal link to the wrong place?

The game sends you to the portal closest to the converted point within its search range: 128 blocks in the Overworld, 16 blocks in the Java Edition Nether and 128 blocks in the Bedrock Edition Nether. Another portal inside that range and closer than yours takes over, so build each portal at its own calculated point.

Does this work for Bedrock and Java?

Yes. The 1:8 conversion is the same in both editions. Only the Nether search range differs: 16 blocks in Java Edition and 128 blocks in Bedrock Edition.
