How Does the Formula Work?

The gravel calculator works out how much gravel a driveway, path, bed or base needs. It takes the area's dimensions and the layer depth, gives the volume in cubic meters, cubic yards and cubic feet, turns it into weight with a set density for each of six gravel types, and counts the truck loads and 25 kg bags needed to buy it.

Volume Formulas:
Rectangular: Length × Width × Depth
Circular: π × (Diameter/2)² × Depth
Triangular: 0.5 × Base × Height × Depth

Weight = Volume × Gravel Density

Gravel Densities:
Pea Gravel: 1,680 kg/m³ | Crushed Stone: 1,600 kg/m³
River Rock: 1,650 kg/m³ | Limestone: 1,500 kg/m³
Granite: 1,750 kg/m³ | Recycled: 1,450 kg/m³

Example: 10m × 5m × 5cm crushed stone
Volume = 10 × 5 × 0.05 = 2.5 m³ (3.27 yd³)
Weight = 2.5 × 1,600 = 4,000 kg = 4 tons
Truck loads = 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25, rounded up to 1
Bags = 4,000 ÷ 25 = 160

Gravel Types and Weight

The type you pick changes the weight, not the volume. Crushed stone is broken rock with sharp edges, pea gravel and river rock are naturally rounded, and the recycled option stands for crushed concrete or asphalt. Granite is the heaviest in this calculator at 1,750 kg/m³ and recycled the lightest at 1,450 kg/m³, so the same volume of granite comes out about 21% heavier. If your supplier quotes a density for the exact product, that number beats any of these.

Mixing Units

Each field is converted to meters on its own before anything is multiplied, so you can enter the length in feet and the depth in centimeters if that is how you measured. Depth counts as much as length and width: doubling it doubles the volume and the weight.

Bulk vs Bags

The result shows two ways to buy the same amount. The truck line divides the volume by 10 m³ and rounds up, with the exact number of loads in brackets; the bag line divides the weight by 25 kg and rounds up. Both sizes are this calculator's assumptions rather than a rule, because trucks and bags vary, so check what your supplier actually delivers before you order.

Gravel vs Fill Dirt

Use the Fill Dirt Calculator when the material is soil rather than stone. It takes the same three shapes and units, offers five soil densities from topsoil at 1,350 kg/m³ to gravel at 1,800 kg/m³, and adds a second truck size in cubic yards.

Tips & Recommendations

6 Gravel Types

Crushed stone, pea gravel, river rock, limestone, granite, and recycled; each with its own density in kg/m³ for the weight.

Bulk + Bags

See both truck loads (10 m³) for bulk delivery and 25 kg bags for retail purchase, each rounded up to a whole number.

Mixed Units Work

Length in feet, depth in centimeters: each value is converted to meters before the volume is worked out.

Nothing Added for Waste

The volume is the exact size of the space. Any allowance for spillage or settling is yours to add.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does gravel weigh?

That depends on the stone. This calculator uses one density per type: pea gravel 1,680 kg/m³, crushed stone 1,600, river rock 1,650, limestone 1,500, granite 1,750 and recycled 1,450 kg/m³. Wet stone weighs more than dry, and a supplier's figure for its own product can differ, so use theirs when you have it.

What depth should I enter?

Enter the thickness of the finished layer and choose its unit: centimeters, meters, inches or feet. The calculator does not suggest a depth, because the right one depends on the job and on what lies underneath; take it from your plan or ask your supplier.

What shapes are supported?

Rectangular, circular, and triangular. Choose the closest match to your project area. For irregular shapes, divide into sections and calculate each separately.

How are bags calculated?

The total weight is divided by 25 kg and rounded up, since a part bag still has to be bought. Stores sell other bag sizes too; if yours does, divide the kilogram figure by that weight instead.

Should I order extra gravel?

The result is the exact volume of the space, with nothing added for spillage, uneven ground or settling. How much to add is a call for your project, and the supplier who knows the material is a good person to ask.
